The Wye Valley through the seasons

The Wye Valley landscape in changing seasonal colours

One of the loveliest things about the Wye Valley is how completely it transforms across the year. Whenever you choose to stay at Field Cottage, there's something special waiting — here's what each season has to offer.

Spring

As the valley wakes up, the woods fill with bluebells and wild garlic, lambs appear in the fields and the river runs full and fresh. It's a glorious time for walking, with everything turning green and the days lengthening. Penyard Woods near Ross are particularly beautiful in April and May.

Summer

Long, warm days are made for the river. Hire a canoe, picnic on the banks, or simply enjoy a barbecue in the cottage's garden as the evening light fades. It's also festival season, with events across Ross-on-Wye and the surrounding villages.

Summer evenings in the garden, with the swifts wheeling overhead and not a sound but birdsong, are what countryside holidays are made for.

Autumn

Arguably the valley at its most spectacular. The wooded gorges blaze with red, gold and copper, and the view from Symonds Yat Rock is simply breathtaking. Crisp, clear days are perfect for walking, and the cooler evenings call for a cosy night in by the fire.

Winter

The valley takes on a quiet, atmospheric beauty in winter — misty mornings over the river, frosty fields and the chance to have the footpaths almost to yourself. Back at the cottage, draw the curtains, light the fire and settle in. It's an idyllic spot for a peaceful Christmas or New Year escape with the whole family.

So when should you visit?

Honestly? There's no wrong answer. Families tend to love the summer river days; walkers and photographers adore autumn; and those seeking a quiet retreat will find winter hard to beat. With space for eight and comforts for every season, Field Cottage is ready whenever you are.
