Dog Friendly

Dog-friendly days out in Herefordshire

A happy dog on a countryside walk in the Wye Valley

At Field Cottage, four-legged guests are every bit as welcome as the two-legged kind. With a large, fully enclosed garden and countryside walks straight from the door, it's a wonderful place to bring the dog. Here's how to plan a holiday the whole family — including the furriest members — will love.

Walks they'll love

The quiet lanes and footpaths around Peterstow are ideal for off-lead adventures, while the riverside paths in Ross-on-Wye offer flat, scenic strolls with plenty of sniffing opportunities. For something bigger, the Forest of Dean has miles of woodland trails where dogs can roam to their heart's content.

Dog-friendly pubs

Herefordshire and the Wye Valley are blessed with welcoming country pubs, many of which positively encourage muddy paws by the fire. Look out for water bowls at the door and dog treats behind the bar — a sure sign your companion is in good hands while you enjoy a local cider.

Tip: ring ahead at busy times to check dogs are welcome in the dining area, not just the bar.

Days out together

  • Symonds Yat: woodland walks, the hand-pulled ferry (dogs ride free) and riverside cafes with outdoor seating.
  • Goodrich Castle: dogs on leads are welcome in the grounds.
  • Forest of Dean: the sculpture trail and Cannop Ponds are firm favourites with dog walkers.
  • Ross-on-Wye riverside: an easy, flat loop with cafe stops.

What we provide

The cottage's enclosed garden means you can let dogs out safely first thing without worrying about roads. There's plenty of hard flooring downstairs for muddy paws, and lots of space for everyone to spread out after a day of adventures.

We do ask that dogs are kept off the beds and furniture, and that you bring their own bedding — but otherwise, make yourselves at home.
