The 6 best walks near Ross-on-Wye
One of the joys of staying at Field Cottage is that walks begin right outside the front door. But venture a little further and you'll find some of the finest walking country in England. Here are six of our favourites, from after-breakfast strolls to proper half-day hikes.
1. The Wye Valley Walk from Ross-on-Wye
This long-distance trail follows the river all the way from Chepstow to the source in mid-Wales, but you can pick up an easy, flat section straight from Ross. Follow the river out of town for as far as you fancy, then turn back — perfect for an easy morning with dogs and little legs.
2. Symonds Yat Rock circular
A moderate woodland walk rewarded by one of the most spectacular views in the country. Park at Symonds Yat Rock, take in the gorge from the viewpoint, then loop down through the trees to the river and back. Around 4 miles.
3. Goodrich Castle & the river
Combine history and scenery on this gentle route linking the village of Goodrich with the riverbank, passing the dramatic medieval castle. Great for families.
4. Penyard Woods
Just outside Ross, these ancient woods are laced with trails and burst into bluebells each spring. A shady, peaceful choice on a warm day.
5. The Forest of Dean sculpture trail
A 20-minute drive away, the Forest of Dean offers miles of waymarked paths, including the famous sculpture trail — art and ancient woodland combined. Plenty of shorter options if you've got young walkers.
6. A stroll from the cottage
Don't overlook the simplest option: a wander along the quiet lanes and footpaths around Peterstow. Big skies, open fields and barely a car — the perfect way to start or end the day.
Walking tips
- Pack sturdy footwear — riverside paths can be muddy after rain.
- Download the OS Maps app for offline routes; signal can be patchy in the gorge.
- Many local pubs welcome muddy boots and dogs — perfect for a well-earned lunch.
